Q1. Can you have H. pylori with a negative test?
A1. A negative (normal) H. pylori test result means that you probably don't have an H. pylori infection. Your provider may order more tests to find out the cause of your symptoms. A positive test result means that you have an H. pylori infection.
Q2. How accurate is the H. pylori antigen test?
A2. Pylori are 90-96% for the UBT, 86-94% for serological testing, and 81-98% for SAT.
Q3. How long can you test positive for H. pylori?
A3. Blood tests for H pylori can only tell if your body has H pylori antibodies. It cannot tell if you have a current infection or how long you have had it. This is because the test can be positive for years, even if the infection is cured.
Q4. What can cause a false positive H. pylori test?
A4. A false-positive test may occur due to urease associated with other gastric spiral organisms observed in humans such as Helicobacter heilmannii. A false-positive test could occur in patients who have achlorhydria.
Q5. How sensitive is the test for H. pylori?
A5. Pylori by the means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Different serological tests are commercially available and used routinely in clinical laboratories. Their sensitivity is quoted at 80-95% and specificity at 80-95%.
