Q1. What happens if a dog tests positive for brucellosis?
A1. In dogs. Brucellosis is very difficult to treat and relapses are common. Treatment includes spaying or neutering, giving antibiotics for several months, and frequent blood tests to monitor treatment progress.
Q2. What is canine Brucella antibody test?
A2. Serological tests (antibodies) are the most sensitive test to detect dogs with Brucella infection in dogs. PCR testing lacks sensitivity and there is a high risk of false negative and therefore a negative PCR test does not exclude infection.
Q3. Can Brucella canis give false positive?
A3. False-positive tests are relatively common, and any dog that tests positive with the RSAT test should have the disease confirmed with an advanced test. Likewise, the Tube Agglutination Test (TAT), which provides an actual measurement (titer) of antibodies against B. canis, can also be used as a screening test.
Q4. What does it mean if Brucella test is positive?
A4. An abnormal (positive) result usually means you have come in contact with the bacteria that causes brucellosis or a closely related bacteria. However, this positive result does not mean that you have an active infection. Your provider will have you repeat the test after a few weeks to see if the test result increases.
Q5. How often do you test for brucellosis in dogs?
A5. Every 3-6 months.
